Law School Financial Aid

No student who has truly superior abilities should be prevented from obtaining a legal education for lack of sufficient personal funds. The Law School therefore provides significant scholarship and loan assistance, both from general scholarship funds of the university and from special scholarship fund donations to the Law School.

Scholarships

  • Stephen L Richards Scholarships

Each year a few select law students are chosen as Stephen L Richards scholars. Selections are made on the basis of undergraduate records, law school records, and other evidence of superior accomplishment and potential. The stipend for Richards scholars is full tuition and book allowance covering two semesters, subject to the maintenance of a satisfactory scholastic record. The source of funds for these special awards is the family of the late Stephen L Richards, a former member of the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and one who achieved the highest degree of excellence both in the legal profession and in service to others.

  • Edwin S. Hinckley Scholarship

One student is selected each year to receive the Edwin S. Hinckley Scholarship, a full-tuition scholarship provided through the generosity of the surviving sons of Mr. Edwin S. Hinckley.

Student Loans

  • Short-Term Loans

Short-term loans are available for emergency assistance to students whose income is assured but delayed. Such loans bear no interest and must be repaid within the current semester. Short-term loans may cover up to the cost of tuition for students who are in good academic standing.

  • Federal Stafford Loans (SL)

The Federal Stafford Loan Program enables students to borrow from a bank participating in the program. Availability of funds through these sources depends on state and federal legislation and regulation as well as independent participation in the programs by individual banks. The student should contact the university's Financial Aid Office, Brigham Young University,(801) 378-4104, A-41 ASB, PO Box 21009, Provo, UT 84602-1009, for assistance in applying for these loans.

The Law School is a participant in a program cosponsored by the Law School Admissions Council that provides guaranteed access to Stafford Loans (SL) and Auxiliary Loans to Assist Students (ALAS) to any full-time student enrolled in the Law School. The loans are granted, based on need, in amounts up to $8,500 for SL and $3,000 for ALAS loans. The program provides a simplified application process and special favorable repayment terms. Contact either the BYU Financial Aid Office for additional information.

  • Law School Loan Funds

In addition to the loan programs described above, the Law School has loan funds available exclusively to law students.

  • Roland Rich Woolley Family Law Student Loan Fund

Through the generosity of Roland Rich Woolley, a noted Los Angeles attorney, his wife, Alice Spry Woolley, and his daughter, Mary Alice Woolley, the Law School is able to provide a private source of loan funds for law students. Woolley Family Law Student Loans are available to full-time law students in amounts up to $4,000 per year. Repayment of the loan at the annual interest rate of 9 percent starts nine months after discontinuance of full-time student status. Information concerning these loan funds may be obtained from the Financial Aid Office, Brigham Young University, A-41 ASB, PO Box 21009, Provo, UT 84602-1009.
