GroupWise Email Setup

The Law School uses Novell's GroupWise email system. There are many ways to access your email. We recommend and support the GroupWise Windows client for use on your personal laptop and the Groupwise WebAccess for use on other computers and on the road. We also offer instructions for multiple other unsupported email solutions; see below for details.

Fully Supported Email Solutions:

1) Use the GroupWise email client to access the GroupWise email system. Most people prefer this method because the Groupwise Client (when set to "Caching Mode";) stores all your law school email on your computer, allowing you to access your emails and reply to email even when you're not connected to the internet. Download the GroupWise client for Windows XP by clicking here (72 MB). Below is a screen shot of how your screen should look after installation:

Students should use the following Address and Port Information:

Faculty should use the following Address and Port Information:

2) Acccessing Your E-mail Through the Web. A second method of accessing your e-mail is to use a web browser, similar to what you previously might have done for a gmail or yahoo email account. To access your email mailbox on the web, go to http://lawemail.byu.edu/ then enter your username and password. If you plan on regualrly accessing your email over the web you might want to bookmark this website address for quick access.

Unsupported Email Solutions

1) Outlook Connector for GroupWise

Novell provides an Outlook Connector for GroupWise that allows you to use Microsoft Outlook to directly access GroupWise. Unlike IMAP access, the Connector provides full access to most GroupWise functionality, including your GroupWise Address Book and Calendar. For information on the feature sets available with the Outlook Connector vs. the standard Groupwise Windows client, please see this page on the Novell web site.

Please note: This only works with Outlook 2003 and earlier, currently Outlook 2007 is not supported. The HelpDesk does not support Microsoft Outlook; this information is provided as a convenience for those who insist upon using Outlook as their email client. Although no formal support is provided for either the Connector or IMAP access, we recommended using the Connector rather than IMAP if you must use Outlook as a client with GroupWise.

The Outlook Connector for GroupWise may be downloaded here, this will download a .zip file which must be uncompressed, then click on setup.exe to start the install process. The Connector installation includes the Outlook components necessary to connect to the GroupWise system but does not include Micrsoft Outlook.

When starting the Outlook client please enter the following address and port and the client will be automatically directed to the correct post office:

  • Student Post Office Address: 128.187.43.77
  • Student Post Office Port: 1678

2) Accessing your email using an IMAP email client (i.e. Outlook,Thunderbird,etc.). One way to retrieve law school email is by sending it to a different email client, such as Microsoft Outlook. Remember the standard GroupWise Client or WebAccess are the only supported methods for accessing GroupWise. For instructions on how to use IMAP or POP to access your email from another client click on this link: IMAP Instructions. Please be aware that the Law School does not support Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, or any other email client. If you decide to use an email client other than Groupwise, we won't be able to help with questions about that client.

3) GroupWise Cross-Platform Client. For Macintosh and Linux users, Novell provides a cross-platform Java-based GroupWise client that offers near feature-parity with the Windows client. Although no formal support is provided for either alternative, we recommend either the GroupWise Cross-Platform Client or IMAP for accessing GroupWise from Mac or Linux based machines. For a comparison of Windows Client, WebAccess, and Cross-Platform client features, please look at Novell's documentation.

Download the appropriate version of the cross-platform client from the links below. Please note that the HelpDesk does not provide formal support for this client:

When starting the GroupWise Cross-Platform client you will be prompted for the address and port of your GroupWise post office. Enter the following address and port:

  • Student Post Office Address: 128.187.43.77
  • Student Post Office Port: 1678
