Law School Choir Gives Students a Rest
In addition to showcasing some of the many talents of BYU Law students, the law school choir gives its members a chance to make friends and find respite from the rigors of law school.
“I love the social aspect of the choir,” club founder and current president Breanne Hayes (2L) said. “You make a lot of great friends being in such a close group.”
The choir provides a great opportunity for students to get to know each other outside of the classroom setting, providing a much-needed break from studying. Current Vice President Cossandra Mix joined the law choir not only for her love of music but also to find a welcome diversion.
“I think the choir gives students (both in and out of the choir) the opportunity to relax,” Mix said.
Members of the choir come from all different levels of expertise. While some have no formal vocal training, others sing as current members of BYU Singers. The choir also includes former men’s and women’s chorus members, and former University Chorale members. Regardless of the wide range of vocal ability, everyone has a good time.
“There are people with really great talents - violinists, flautists, harpists, opera singers," Hayes said. "There are students with a lot of talents and abilities here at the law school, and you just don’t know because all you see them do in the classroom is analyze cases."
Hayes organized the choir and received approval from the SBA in September 2010 to form an official club. The choir’s first performance was that December at the faculty Christmas party. Twelve people performed at that Christmas party. At the faculty Christmas party in December, 2011 the number increased to 18.
After a standing-room-only performance for Carol in the Commons last December, the choir hopes for an even bigger turnout to the choir’s Spring recital on Wednesday, March 28th, at 7:00 PM. The evening recital will feature both students and faculty members and will be held on the main floor of the library.
The law school choir club holds rehearsals every week. Students and faculty are invited to participate, even if their schedules may not permit weekly rehearsal attendance.
