BYU Student Bar Association Sponsors Class Olympics and Club Fair

 

J. Reuben Clark Law School’s Student Bar Association opened up the 2009-2010 year with a bang at this year’s Student Bar Association Opening Social on September 3. Each class competed for medals in the SBA’s Law School Olympics.

The “Olympics” were followed by a club fair on the terrace in front of the law school. BYU has clubs to suit a large variety of student interests. New clubs this year include “Iron Justice” which is the BYU Law golf club, and the Bob Loblaw Law Society, dedicated to law in pop culture.

 

Alternative Dispute Resolution

The ADR Society’s mission is to increase student awareness, provide educational opportunities, and advance the use of non-litigious means of resolving disputes through guest speakers, presentations, training sessions, and competitions.

American Constitution Society

The American Constitution Society works to ensure that fundamental principles of human dignity, individual rights and liberties, genuine equality, and access to justice enjoy their rightful, central place in American law. The club brings engaging speakers to campus, and sponsors forums on current issues and socials.

Asian Legal Society

The Asian Legal Society works to expose law students to current events, foods, and cultures of Asian countries. All students are invited to participate.

Black Law Student Association

The association promotes diversity and seeks publicity for the minority legal community. It also holds an annual convention to engage in legal activism and prepare a new generation of black lawyers.

 

Bob Loblaw Law Society

“A group of friends who watch TV shows with lawyers in them.”

They are looking to sponsor a lecture this year focusing on legal issues in pop culture. There are no club dues, but there is free popcorn.

 

Family Law Society

The Family Law Society is dedicated to providing family law education, preparing students to become successful lawyers, and improving our communities. Family law is the largest area of law in America, and the Family Law Society seeks to educate members and others about the basic principles of family law.

Government and Politics Legal Society

Features food, monthly lectures by legal and political leaders on current topics, and a yearly legal conference where students meet lawyers and legal professionals from all over Utah.

 

Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Societies

The Federalist Society is a group of conservatives and libertarians interested in the current state of the legal order. Click here to learn more about the national organization. The BYU chapter sponsors lectures and events on a variety of topics.

International Law Students Association

ILSA is a student-run organization for those interested in international and comparative law. The organization’s activities include academic conferences, publications, the global coordination of student chapters, and the administration of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.

Iron Justice

J. Reuben Clark Law Society

It’s a national club of 7000 attorneys and 2000 students who believe in an ethical approach to law and in providing service to the community. All BYU Law students are members of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society, but it is requested that they sign up at www.jrcls.org.

 

Legal Spin

The BYU Law cycling club. It’s a great way to have fun, exercise, and spend time outdoors with fellow law students. The club meets every other week for bike rides.

Pacific Islander Law Student Association

Phi Delta Phi

Phi Delta Phi is one of the oldest professional organizations in the Western Hemisphere. It is dedicated to ethics and stresses the importance of law professionals having a duty to the law, and not solely the client. The BYU chapter sponsors blood drives and a food drive.

Public Interest Law Foundation

The Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) encourages students to get involved early in their careers in public interest work - free or inexpensive legal work for the poor and underrepresented.  PILF does this by raising money at an annual auction and biannual book sale.  All proceeds go to students who work at public interest jobs during the summer and school year.

Running Objection

The BYU Law Running Club organizes a carpool to meet and go running every other week on a rotating schedule with Legal Spin, the BYU cycling club.

 

Student Intellectual Property Law Association

SILPA meets with local intellectual property leaders and attorneys to campus to discuss issues pertinent to intellectual property law.

 

Women’s Law Forum

The BYU Women's Law Forum empowers women to succeed in their community, home and professional careers by providing mentoring, support, service and education about issues affecting women.

Jail Outreach

Jail Outreach is a BYU Law School student organization dedicated to improving the U.S. incarceration system. Their members include both law students and undergraduate students. Their mission is three-fold:

  1. To assist in the educational development of inmates directly;
  2. To raise awareness of issues of social justice on the BYU campus; and
  3. To advocate for positive improvements in the incarceration system.

Law Partners

The Law Partners are designed to help make the experience of law school positive and more enjoyable for the spouses of current law students. Opportunities are provided to make friends with other spouses, learn about law related topics and help spouses adjust to being the spouse of an attorney.
