Former dean of the BYU Law School, Carl S. Hawkins, passed away on April 25 at the age of 84. His dedication and contributions to the BYU Law School will be forever remembered and appreciated.

“Carl Hawkins was a remarkably wise and generous person who combined an extraordinary intellect with a humble heart, "said Dean James Rasband. "His willingness to share those gifts with colleagues and students, as well as his example of rigorous scholarly inquiry paired with faithful service, were critical to establishing the law school and setting its course. We are indebted to him.”

Hawkins began teaching at the University of Michigan Law School in 1957 and continued through 1973 when he joined the faculty at the J. Reuben Clark Law School. Hawkins was one of the key founders of the BYU Law School and helped build the school into what it is today.
