Alternative Dispute Resolution Society

The ADR Society Mission

ADR Society's mission is to increase student awareness, provide educational opportunities, and advance the use of non-litigious means of resolving disputes through guest speakers, presentations, training sessions, and competitions. The ADR Society also keeps students informed of ADR opportunities in the local community and encouraging students to take advantage of them.

ADR Society is for all Students

We encourage all students to join the ADR Society and participate in its array of activities. The ADR Society benefits all law students, even those interested solely in traditional law practice, by helping them learn how to effectively resolve disputes with opposing counsel via the negotiation process.

Negotiation Competition

In early September or October every year, BYU Law School sponsors a negotiation competition to help students develop their negotiation skills. 1Ls are encouraged to participate. This year, the ADR Society will help participants prepare for the competition via a training session developed to help new students learn the basics of negotiation skills. This year's panel of judges will be comprised of practitioners. The winning team will represent BYU Law School in the ABA Regional Competition.

Client Counseling

BYU Law School is now sponsoring the client counseling competition which has a similar format to that of the negotiation competition. The Client Counseling Competition is the only one of its kind in the U.S. and Canada. It simulates a law office consultation in which law students, acting as attorneys, are presented with a client matter. They conduct an interview with a client and then explain how they would proceed further in the hypothetical situation. This competition is open to all BYU Law students.

Mediation and Arbitration

By participating in training sessions, observing mediations, and fulfilling other small criteria, law students can become certified mediators in Utah.

Small Claims Court Mediation Program

Trained, law-student mediators regularly volunteer at Utah County small claims courts to provide free mediation services, helping parties come to agreements that are generally more satisfactory and creative than the alternative court judgment.
