Backing Up and Restoring Information
How to Backup to External Hard Drive, and CD/DVD for IBM
- Press blue thinkvantage button
- Go to "Protect my data"
- Go to "Backup and restore my data"

Three options (Backup to external hard drive, local hard drive, or CDDVD)
- To backup to external hard drive
- Go to "Set schedule and preferences"
- Under backup locations click "USB HDD"
- You may set a time to automatically backup your computer under "Schedule your backups"
- Click "ok"
- Go to "Create and view backups"
- Under "Save to" and "Backup locations" make sure "USB" is selected
- Make a Backup name.
- Click "ok"



- To backup to CD/DVD
- Go to "Create and view backups"
- Under "Save to:" mark CDR/DVD
- Give the Backup a name, and click "ok."
- Insert the blank media and follow the dialogue.

How to Restore Your Data
Restoring Data From a Saved Backup (IBM)
Options:
- Restore data from the windows environment
- Restoring data from from pre-boot menu (used if you cannot boot into windows)
- Restoring data to a replacement (factory sent) hard drive
1. Restoring data from the windows environment
- Press blue ThinkVantage button
- Go to "Protect my data"
- Go to "Backup and restore my data"
- Go to "Restore your system from a backup"


Three options:
- Restore my entire hard drive. (Restores computer to the exact state when backup was taken)
- Rejuvenate my system. (This can help to eliminate a virus, while maintain your current settings and data. It will take make a new backup and defrag your hard drive. It then will restore windows.
- Restore only the Windows operating system and applications from a backup. (This can help if your Windows operating system has become corrupt. It will also preserve your current data.)

- Click "next"
- Choose the location of your saved backup.
- Click "next"
- Click "next"

Your backup should begin. It should take 30-90 min depending on the size of your backup.
2. Restoring data from pre-boot menu. (used if you cannot boot into windows)
- As the computer starts and the Lenovo logo appears press the blue Thinkvantage button.
- It should start into the Rescue and Recovery environment.
- Click on "Restore your system"

Three options:
- Restore my entire hard drive. (Restores computer to the exact state when backup was taken)
- Rejuvenate my system. (This can help to eliminate a virus, while maintain your current settings and data. It will take make a new backup and defrag your hard drive. It then will restore windows.
- Restore only the Windows operating system and applications from a backup. (This can help if your Windows operating system has become corrupt. It will also preserve your current data.)

- Click "next"
- Choose the location of your saved backup.
- You may save changes done since your last backup. Choose options that may pertain to you. Click "next"
- Choose "Preserve my Windows User ID and password:" Click "next"



Your backup should begin. It should take 30-90 min depending on the size of your backup.
3. Restoring data to a replacement (factory sent) hard drive.
- Before you replace your hard drive, you need to create recovery media. For instructions, click here.
- Using the recovery media that you made or that were sent with the new hard drive, restart the computer with the first CD in the disk drive.
- It should start into the Rescue and Recovery environment.
- Click on "Restore your system"
Option:
- Choose: Restore my entire hard drive. (Restores computer to the exact state when backup was taken)
- Click "next"
- Choose the location of your saved backup.
- Click "next"
- Click "next"

Your backup should begin. It should take 30-90 min depending on the size of your backup.
