1. New Zealand: Marriage for Heterosexuals Only
21
June 2004
Marriage
is for heterosexuals only, though new legislation aims
to
ensure no couples are disadvantaged under the law, Prime Minister
Helen
Clark said today.
MPs
will this week vote on that controversial legislation – the Civil
Union
Bill and a companion bill, together dubbed the gay marriage bill
by
critics.
The long_delayed bill creates
a new form of legal relationship – a
registered civil union – that
would apply to same_sex relationships and heterosexual couples.
Miss
Clark told NewstalkZB questions as to whether the legislation would
give
gay couples the same status as heterosexual married couples were
"really
not that relevant". . . .
"The Government is not –
underline – not, changing the Marriage Act.
That will remain as an option
only for heterosexual couples."

Article: Test Vote Likely On Gay 'Marriage'
By Amy Fagan
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
House leaders are likely to
hold a test vote on issues related to
homosexual
"marriage" to show where House members stand before
they push ahead with an
actual constitutional amendment.
Options under discussion for
a House vote, Republican aides said,
include legislation that
would strip federal courts of their jurisdiction
to hear cases regarding the
definition of marriage, and a measure that
would define marriage in the
District of Columbia as being between a
man and a woman.
A House Republican leadership
aide explained that voting first on
legislation like this is a
way to "flesh out where the votes are" and let
leaders and outside groups
target members who vote no, in order to
persuade them to support the
constitutional amendment later on.
Rep. Joe Pitts, Pennsylvania
Republican, said he and other backers of
the constitutional amendment
"don't have a complete read" on where
members stand on it, and an
initial vote on related legislation would
help them identify who to
target.

2. Pro-Abortion
Advocates Look to Regional Meetings to
Stymie US
By Catholic Family and Human

June 11, 2004
Perhaps feeling frustrated by
the Bush administration’s strong pro-live
presence at international
negotiations, pro-abortion advocates have
adopted a strategy of using
regional economic meetings to promote the
worldwide legalization of
abortion on demand. This strategy has
been
particularly prominent in
Latin America, where a number of Economic Commission for Latin America and the
Caribbean (ECLAC) meetings
have now focused upon population and abortion.

3. Australia
Considers Unborn Victims Law After Violence
Against Woman
by Maria Gallagher

June 17, 2004
Sydney, Australia
(LifeNews.com) __ Nearly three years after his death,
a baby boy named Byron is
serving as the inspiration behind a law
designed to protect pregnant
mothers and their unborn children in Australia.
In November, 2001, Renee
Shields of Sydney lost her unborn son Byron
after an incident of road
rage.
Cases of violence against
pregnant women have triggered widespread
attention in Australia and
renewed calls for tough sanctions against those
who kill an unborn child
through an act of violence.
A spokesman for the Attorney
General's Department has confirmed that
"Byron's Law" will
be introduced as a new piece of legislation.

4. New Bible Translation Promotes
Fornication
June 24, 2004
WorldNetDaily.com
A brand_new translation of
the Bible – praised by Britain's archbishop
of Canterbury, that nation’s
senior Christian voice – flatly contradicts
traditional core Christian
beliefs on sex and morality.
Titled "Good as
New," the new Bible is translated by former Baptist
minister John Henson for the
"One" organization, to produce what the
group calls a "new,
fresh and adventurous" translation of the Christian
scriptures.
"Instead of condemning
fornicators, adulterers and 'abusers of themselves
with mankind'," says
Ruth Gledhill, the London Times religious affairs correspondent, "the new
version of his first letter to Corinth has St. Paul
advising Christians not to go
without sex for too long in case they get
'frustrated.'"

5. Most Young
Men Still the 'Marrying Kind'
National study of men links
men's marital outlook with upbringing
June 24, 2004
By David Crary
The Associated Press
NEW YORK — While most single
young men aspire to marriage, about
one_fifth are deeply
skeptical of the institution and their prospects of
making it work, according to
a new national survey which closely links
men's marital outlook to
their upbringing.
The survey, released
Wednesday by the National Marriage Project at
Rutgers University, found
that the men with negative attitudes were far
more likely than the rest to
have been raised by a divorced parent in a non_churchgoing family.
"Most young men are
still 'the marrying kind,"' said a report accompanying
the survey. "Moreover,
the men who are the best marriage bets' are those
who are more traditional in
their family and religious background."
