1. Governor declares Marriage Fidelity Day
By Timothy Inklebarger
Juneau Empire
September 10, 2004
Alaska is the first state in the nation to discourage
cheating spouses with an official observance of Marriage Fidelity Day.
Gov. Frank Murkowski this month signed a proclamation
marking Sept. 15 the day for reminder of marriage vows.
"Infidelity inevitably wreaks destruction on
families in general and on innocent children and spouses in particular,"
the proclamation states. "Marriages are the basis for a stable family unit
and infidelity creates instability and volatility."
The day was made official at the request of Penny Tupy
of Prescott, Wisc. Tupy is the owner of Save Your Marriage Central Lifeworks
Coaching Services. Tupy also is founder and director of the nonprofit
organization Save Your Marriage Central Global Village Inc., which advocates
for healthy marriages.
"I want to do for affairs what MADD did for
drinking and driving," she said. "We take the position that an affair
is not a love story. It's a tragedy. We are working to raise awareness of the
risk factors for having an affair and how to avoid them."

2. Pope Denounces Variations of 'Marriage'
NewsMax Wires
Monday, Sept. 13, 2004
VATICAN CITY __ Pope John Paul II told New Zealand
bishops Monday that efforts to equate marriage between man and woman to other
forms of cohabitation violated "God's plan for humanity."
New Zealand's parliament has been debating proposed
legislation that would grant "civil union" status to couples _ both
same_sex and heterosexual _ who live together, giving them many of the same
rights as married couples.
Conservative critics have labeled it the "Gay
Marriage Bill," although it doesn't formally recognize gay marriages and
differentiates between civil unions and marriage.
"Spouses rightly deserve specific and categorical
legal recognition by the state," the pope said, "while any attempt to
equate marriage with other forms of cohabitation violates its unique role in
God's plan for humanity."

Group opposing domestic_partners law
plans recall
Bob Egelko,
Sacramento Chronicle Staff Writer
September 13, 2004
An organization opposed to same_sex marriage is
targeting a Sacramento judge for recall after he upheld a state law that would
give registered domestic partners many of the same rights as married couples.
Superior Court Judge Loren McMaster "trashed the
vote of the people and ruled in favor of the corrupt legislators who hated the
voters' opinions on marriage,'' Randy Thomasson, executive director of the
Campaign for California Families, said Friday.
The state law, AB205, scheduled to take effect Jan. 1,
increases the rights available to domestic partners, a status recognized by
California in 1999. The new rights are to include community property, child
custody and support on the same terms as spouses, as well as certain government
benefits, bereavement leave and the right not to testify against a partner.
It was challenged in court by Thomasson's group and
other supporters of Proposition 22, the voter_approved 2000 ballot measure that
prohibited California from recognizing same_sex marriages. They argued that
AB205 was the equivalent of a same_sex marriage law and could not take effect
without voter approval.

Supported Strongly
By Deborah Bulkeley
Deseret Morning News
September 13, 2004
Support remains strong for a proposed amendment that
would write a ban on same_sex marriage into the Utah Constitution, according to
a new Deseret Morning News/KSL_TV poll conducted by Dan Jones & Associates.
Sixty_three percent of the 915 registered voters
polled statewide said they'd vote in favor of the amendment this November.
The amendment would define marriage as "the legal
union between a man and a woman"; it would also provide that "no
other domestic union may be recognized as a marriage or given the same or
substantially equal legal effect."

Young Adults Bored with
Sexual Advertising
by Josh Montez, correspondent
September 7, 2004
Ad agency spots a new trend among young adults. Will
advertisers ride along?
Young urban trendsetters are getting bored with
sexually explicit advertising. That's according to HeadlightVision, an ad
agency for companies like Coca Cola and Ford.
"Some people might find that surprising, because
you would assume that sex would sell more than play or child_like imagery, and
that's actually not the case," said Allison O'Keefe, global editor at
HeadlightVision.
Their research shows young adults are more interested
in a fun and playful lifestyle. David Caton of Americans for Responsible Media,
is pleased with the direction of this trend.
"Our country is awakening to values!" Caton
exclaimed.

4. The East is Grey - China has failed to
provide for its old age
and will almost certainly have to review
its one_child policy,
writes Jonathan Watts
The Guardian, UK
Thursday September 9, 2004
For much of the last century China's communist
government claimed, in the words of the revolutionary anthem: "The east is
red." Now, however, it is warning that the colour most likely to be
associated with the country in the future is grey.
The world's most populous nation is rapidly growing
old, and as a new white paper on pensions revealed this week, the demographic
change could undermine economic growth and social stability unless the
government takes radical steps to prepare for a wave of hundreds of millions of
new retirees.
China is far from unique in worrying about its
wrinkles, but it has particular cause for concern because of the speed at which
it is ageing and its lack of resources to deal with the consequences.
